Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat butter or olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for about 20–25 minutes until golden and sweet, stirring occasionally.
Cooking
  1. Once the onions are caramelized, push them to the side of the skillet.
  2. Add the ground beef to the center of the skillet and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
  3. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Let it simmer briefly.
  4. Stir the caramelized onions back into the beef mixture and allow everything to meld together for a few minutes.
  5. Sprinkle your choice of cheese over the mixture and cover the pan briefly until the cheese is melted.
Assembly
  1. Spoon the filling onto the toasted sandwich buns. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve hot.

Notes

Serve with crispy potato chips, simple green salad, or coleslaw. Leftovers can be stored for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
